The Christian Association of Nigeria has announced a national “Black Sunday” to honour victims of violence and terrorism across the country, alongside a three-day prayer programme focused on national healing and peace.

The Christian Association of Nigeria has declared Sunday, June 14, 2026, a national "Black Sunday" as a solemn tribute to Nigerians who have lost their lives or suffered as a result of terrorist attacks and other forms of violence across the country.

The association also announced a three-day prayer programme to run from June 12 to June 14.

CAN President Archbishop Daniel Okoh, speaking after the organisation's National Church Denominational Leadership Summit, made clear that prayer alone would not be enough to solve Nigeria's deepening security crisis, and that concrete, practical steps must be taken urgently to restore peace and safety.

He called on the Federal Government to formally declare a state of emergency on insecurity, arguing that the situation has reached a critical point demanding immediate action.

He also pushed for the fast-tracking of state police and a decentralisation of the country's security structure, which he believes would allow for quicker and more effective responses to threats at the local level.

Additionally, Okoh demanded the unconditional release of all those currently held in captivity and called for justice for all victims of insecurity across the nation.
