More than 700 protesters in Tanzania have been k!lled while demonstrating against the country's controversial presidential election.
This is as the protest enters its day 3.
The protest erupted on Wednesday, following the country’s presidential election results, disqualification and detention of key opposition candidates.
Reacting to the ongoing crisis, Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, stated that over 700 people have been killed in the three days of demonstration.
Chadema spokesperson, John Kitoka on Friday, said, “as we speak, the overall figure for death is around 700”, the news agency AFP report.
He said “the figure for deaths in Dar es Salaam is around 350 and for Mwanza it is 200-plus. Added to figures across the country”.
The outcome of the Tanzania general election held on Wednesday, which was in favour of the incumbent, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi, CCM party, resulted in a nationwide protest with protesters clashing with security forces.
Following the unrest, the Tanzanian government shutdown the internet and imposed a curfew and banned foreign journalists from covering the events.
