Ten Electoral Facts And Figures Across The Three Senatorial Districts

As the 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election draws near, the political temperature is steadily rising across the state. For candidates and political parties, crafting an effective campaign strategy requires more than just charisma and promises—it demands a deep understanding of the people, geography, and voting trends across the three senatorial zones: Anambra North, Anambra Central, and Anambra South.

Here are ten critical facts and figures every serious contender should know before stepping into the race:
 1. REGISTERED VOTERS DISTRIBUTION
Anambra State has 2,802,790 registered voters according to the latest INEC data.

📌 Anambra Central leads with 1,000,878 voters (36%), making it the only “millionaire” zone in voter strength

📌 Anambra North follows with 939,716 voters (34%)

📌 Anambra South trails with 862,196 voters (30%)

Anambra Central’s voter density makes it a decisive zone electorally.

 2. POPULATION DYNAMICS

According to the 2006 Census data, Anambra State had a population figure of 4,177,828, distributed across the three senatorial districts as follows:

📌 Anambra South – 1,576,804

 ðŸ“Œ Anambra Central – 1,468,793

 ðŸ“Œ Anambra North – 1,132,231

However, the state’s current projected population stands at 6,310,065 and there is a possibility that population distribution across the zones has changed with likelihood of Anambra Central being the most populous, given the rapid population growth in Awka South and Idemili North LGAs particularly. Moreover, the next Population Census will reveal the actual numbers.

3. POPULATION CONTRASTS WITHIN THE CENTRAL ZONE

Idemili North, the state’s most populous LGA and the one with the highest number of registered voters ( 246,318 ), shares the same senatorial zone as Dunukofia, which happens to be the smallest in both metrics. This contrast underscores the diversity within Anambra Central itself – the state’s most politically competitive zone.

 4. POLITICAL WARDS DISTRIBUTION

The state’s 326 political wards are distributed as follows:

 ðŸ“Œ Anambra Central – 117 wards

 ðŸ“Œ Anambra South – 110 wards

 ðŸ“Œ Anambra North – 99 wards

More wards often translate to wider campaign coverage—and more polling logistics.

 5. POLLING UNIT DISTRIBUTION

Anambra has *5,720* Polling Units (PUs), with an average of *464* voters per PU.

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra Central* – 1,966 PUs

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra South* – 1,934 PUs

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra North* – 1,820 PUs

Central again leads the pack, hinting at its pivotal role in election outcomes.

 *6.FEDERAL CONSTITUENCIES LANDSCAPE*

Anambra State has *11* Federal Constituencies in total.

📌 *Anambra Central:* 3 constituencies

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra North:* 4 constituencies

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra South:* 4 constituencies

Despite its population advantage, Anambra Central’s representation is proportionally lower, warranting potential review during future constituency delineation adjustments.

 *7. ADMINISTRATIVE COMPOSITION*

Anambra State comprises *21* Local Government Areas (LGAs), evenly distributed across the three senatorial zones.

📌 *Anambra North:* Onitsha North, Onitsha South, Oyi, Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Ogbaru.

📌 *Anambra Central:* Anaocha, Njikoka, Dunukofia, Awka South, Awka North, Idemili North, Idemili South.

📌 *Anambra South:* Aguata, Orumba North, Orumba South, Nnewi North, Nnewi South, Ekwusigo, Ihiala.

*8. TENURE ANALYSIS OF GOVERNORSHIP BY ZONE*

Since the return to democratic rule in 1999, *Anambra Central* has held the governorship for the longest cumulative period—10 years and 9 months.

By the completion of Governor Charles Soludo’s first tenure in 2026, *Anambra South* will have held power for 8 years and 3 months, while *Anambra North* accounts for 8 years.

*9. GOVERNORS PRODUCED BY EACH ZONE SINCE THE INCEPTION OF 4TH REPUBLIC*

Breaking down by numbers:

ðŸ“Œ *Anambra South* has produced four governors — Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, Dame Virginia Etiaba, Senator Andy Uba, and Prof. Charles Soludo.

ðŸ“Œ *Anambra Central* produced two — Senator Chris Ngige and Mr. Peter Obi.

ðŸ“Œ *Anambra North* produced one — Chief Willie Obiano.

 *10. 2021 GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION TURNOUT*

In the last gubernatorial election (2021):

ðŸ“Œ *Anambra Central* recorded the highest number of votes cast – 87,107,

ðŸ“Œ *Anambra South* followed with 81,235,

 ðŸ“Œ *Anambra North* managed 73,261.

These figures further highlight the Central Zone’s electoral weight and organizational vigour.

 *FINAL TAKEAWAY*

Numbers don’t lie. For any candidate eyeing Agu Awka in 2025, understanding these electoral patterns is not optional—it’s strategic. Each zone has its strengths, voter behaviours, and political legacy. Winning Anambra requires not just a campaign but a carefully calibrated engagement plan that resonates across all three zones—North, Central, and South.
