Illicit Drugs

The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has uncovered and thwarted an attempt to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Olokuta, in Akure, the state capital.

The incident occurred during a routine security screening at the gate lodge of the facility, where correctional officers intercepted two visitors and discovered about four grams of suspected Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes brought into the centre.

A statement issued by the NCoS on Wednesday, January 14, 2025 stated that the substance was carefully wrapped in watertight nylon and was allegedly intended for delivery to an inmate currently in custody.

The suspects were immediately arrested in line with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who has emphasised the need for watertight security measures and safeguarding of all custodial facilities across the country.

The service disclosed that the suspects have since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Commending the officers involved, the Controller of Corrections in Ondo State, Charles Oyewole praised their vigilance, professionalism, and prompt response, describing the interception as a reflection of the service’s renewed commitment to security.

He reaffirmed the resolve of the Nigerian Correctional Service to maintain secure and humane custodial centres while ensuring that all forms of illicit drug trafficking are completely eradicated from the correctional system.

The command also warned members of the public, particularly visitors to custodial centres, that the NCoS will not tolerate any act capable of compromising the safety and security of its facilities, whether from within or outside the custodial walls.
