14-year-old girl k!lled by stray bullet during Maiduguri wedding celebration
A 14-year-old girl has been k!lled by a stray bullet allegedly fired by military personnel during a wedding celebration in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Amnesty International condemned the incident, calling on Nigerian authorities to investigate the reckless use of firearms that led to her de.ath.
The teenager, a secondary school student, was reportedly struck on Saturday, April 4, while inside her home.
The bullet is said to have come from soldiers celebrating at a nearby event centre.
A family friend said she had been preparing to attend the same wedding.
“She lived in the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) quarters with her family and was inside her home when the tragedy occurred. She had just finished applying henna for her mother and herself, joyfully preparing for a family wedding scheduled for that day,” the source said.
Amnesty International described the k!lling as preventable and urged authorities to ensure accountability. The girl was buried on Sunday in Maiduguri, leaving her family and friends seeking answers.
The organisation called for a transparent, impartial, and effective investigation, stressing that the misuse of firearms in civilian areas poses serious risks and must be addressed.
