Dozens of people have reportedly lost their lives after a military airstrike hit a bustling weekly market in Jilli village on Saturday evening, sparking chaos among traders and residents.

The market, situated along the border linking Borno and Yobe states, was filled with activity when explosions suddenly tore through the area, sending people scrambling for safety.

Local councillor Lawan Zannah confirmed the incident, revealing that the death toll has surpassed 30, while more than 20 others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to eyewitness accounts, the strike happened around 4 p.m. at the peak of trading, with multiple fighter jets said to have been involved. One resident claimed to have seen dozens of bodies at the scene, adding that more victims were still being recovered.

Initial reports suggest the operation may have been targeting suspected Boko Haram fighters believed to have gathered nearby. However, the bombs reportedly struck the crowded marketplace instead.

The weekly market typically attracts traders from nearby communities such as Gubio, Chiweram, Benisheikh, Gurokayeya and Geidam.
