The Anambra State Government has directed all mortuary owners and operators across the 21 local government areas of the state to ensure proper registration and renewal of their operating licenses without delay.

The directive was contained in a public notice issued by the Anambra State Ministry of Health, in line with the provisions of the Public Health Law of Anambra State.

According to the notice, the move aims to sanitise the operations of mortuaries, ensure compliance with health and safety standards, and strengthen data management of deaths within the state.

The Ministry stated that all existing mortuary facilities must present their documents for verification and renewal. At the same time, new operators must complete full registration with the Department of Medical Services before commencing operations.

“Operating a mortuary without a valid license from the Ministry of Health is a violation of the Public Health Law and will attract sanctions. This exercise will help us monitor standards, prevent sharp practices, and protect public health,” the notice read in part.

The Ministry further advised members of the public to patronize only government-approved mortuaries and report any facility operating below standard or without proper documentation

The notice urged all affected operators to visit the Ministry of Health headquarters at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, for guidelines on registration and renewal.

A grace period will be communicated for full compliance, after which an enforcement team will commence statewide inspection and clampdown on defaulters.

The Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has repeatedly emphasized that his administration’s “Solution is Here” agenda covers every sector, including public health regulation and safety of Ndi Anambra.
