A major academic shake-up has hit a Nigerian tertiary institution after a sweeping decision quietly reset the future of hundreds of students in one stroke.

Kogi State Polytechnic has withdrawn 229 students from the institution over poor academic performance, as part of measures to uphold academic discipline and maintain educational standards.

The decision was reached during an Academic Board meeting held on May 12, 2026, chaired by the institution's rector, Professor Salihu Sanusi Avidime, following the approval of first semester results for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The meeting was attended by senior officials including principal officers, deans, heads of departments, and other members of the Academic Board, who collectively deliberated on a range of academic matters before arriving at their final decisions.

According to a statement issued by the acting coordinator of public relations and protocols, John Amos Onimisi, a dedicated committee had thoroughly reviewed and verified submissions from various departments and schools prior to the board meeting, ensuring that the results were accurate, fair, and in line with the polytechnic's academic regulations.

The committee's findings served as a key reference point during the board's deliberations.

Rector Professor Avidime commended the committee members for their thoroughness, dedication, and professionalism throughout the process, noting that their work has continued to reinforce the institution's commitment to academic integrity and the maintenance of high educational standards.

The withdrawal of the 229 students signals the polytechnic's determination to enforce its academic regulations and discourage underperformance among its student population.
