Richard Mofe-Damijo is making a strong case for more women taking on bigger leadership roles. For the veteran actor, giving women more opportunities is both the right thing to do and a practical choice.

RMD says Nigeria needs more women in leadership

Speaking in Abuja on Friday as one of the key stakeholders in the Male Feminists Network, RMD said he has seen firsthand what women bring to the table, both on movie sets and beyond. He pointed to one of his films, where women made up most of the crew, saying the experience only strengthened his belief in their abilities.

He said:

“Personally, when I did a film two years ago, I had like 80 percent women in the crew. And I always say to people in my profession, if you want to have anything done in government, put a woman in charge, and you can sleep with ‘you eyes closed.

Just give respect to women and treat them like human beings. Or treat them like the way you would treat your daughter or your wife, with respect, with dignity. You know, don’t objectify them, don’t perpetrate violence. Correcting them does not mean hitting and beating them. It is easier to talk to people these days than to just use your fist.”

For RMD, respect is where it all begins. He believes women shouldn’t have to fight every battle on their own or keep demanding to be treated fairly. Instead, he said  men need to be part of changing the mindset that allows discrimination and violence to continue.

He added that ending gender-based violence requires everyone to get involved, especially men who are in positions to influence others and challenge harmful attitudes.

He stated:

“There are institutionalized and systemic ways that women’s rights are trampled upon in Nigeria, and it is not something only women can fight. We also have to lend our voices to organizations working for women’s rights and against gender-based violence.”
