Paris Saint-Germain have successfully defended their UEFA Super Cup title after edging Aston Villa 2-1 in a tightly fought final in Salzburg on Wednesday.

PSG took an early lead in the 20th minute when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia calmly finished his opportunity to put the Champions League holders in front.
Aston Villa responded with a strong spell of pressure and eventually levelled the contest on the stroke of half-time. Seventeen-year-old Brian Madjo volleyed John McGinn’s cross into the net at the back post in the 45th minute.

The goal made Madjo the youngest player to score in UEFA Super Cup history and provided a memorable moment in his long-awaited competitive debut for Villa.
The teenager had earlier wasted two opportunities, sending one effort wide before heading another chance over the bar. His appearance ended an eight-month wait for competitive action after joining Villa from Metz for £10m in January.
Madjo had been unable to play after FIFA prevented Villa from registering him, but the club successfully challenged the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) earlier this month, allowing him to finally make his competitive debut.
PSG regained the advantage in the 62nd minute through Desire Doue, whose effort stood following a VAR review for a possible offside.
Villa pushed hard in search of another equaliser and created several chances, but PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov made a number of crucial saves to protect his team’s lead.
The result means PSG have now won the UEFA Super Cup in consecutive seasons. They claimed their first title last year after overcoming Tottenham on penalties.
