Super Falcons miss out on World Cup after defeat to South Africa

Both sides came into the crucial clash after losing their respective Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final matches. Nigeria fell 1-0 to Cameroon, while South Africa suffered a 2-1 defeat against hosts Morocco.

With a World Cup playoff place at stake, Thembi Kgatlana gave Banyana Banyana the breakthrough before captain Refiloe Jane added a second goal in the second half.

Nigeria pushed hard for a response and created several chances, but South Africa goalkeeper Kaylin Swart produced important saves to preserve her team’s lead.

The Falcons were eventually given hope when Jane was shown a red card after a handball led to a Nigerian penalty. Christy Ucheibe stepped up and converted from the spot to make it 2-1.

Nigeria pressed for an equaliser during the remaining minutes, including six minutes of added time, but South Africa successfully held on for the victory.

Banyana Banyana will now enter the six-team Inter-Confederation Playoff preliminary round, with three places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup up for grabs.
