This Is Not Habitable - NANS, Students Lament Deplorable Hostel Conditions At Kwara Health College

Students of the Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa, have raised alarm over the deplorable state of their hostel, describing it as a dumping ground unfit for human habitation.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the Chairman of the National
Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Kwara State Chapter, Comrade
Issa Abdulgafar (popularly known as Saoty), visited the school hostel
and expressed shock and dismay at the appalling state of the facility.
He asked the affected students in disbelief, "Are you sure students are living here?" while inspecting one of the hostel rooms.
Students at the scene confirmed the facility was indeed their living
quarters, pointing to bunk beds, cupboards, and the overwhelming stench
that filled the air.
The visibly upset student leader questioned the school management’s
competence and priorities, especially as they reportedly plan to
increase school fees.
He said the school is a professional health institution and questioned the management’s sense of responsibility.
He added that despite the school's condition, the management still wants to increase the fees, stating, “This is not acceptable.”
Abdulgafar noted that it was ironic and alarming that a school dedicated to training health professionals would subject its students to such unsanitary conditions.
He said the school is supposed to be a health college, yet the condition of the students' hostel is appalling. He added that the management had already collected money from the students and was still demanding more.
Students who were present during the visit lamented their daily struggles, citing the unbearable odour, broken facilities, and general neglect of the hostel by the school authorities.
Abdulgafar said, "We want everybody to look at it now, this is supposed to be a health school, Kwara State College of Health Technology, Offa.
"Look at the hostel that has been provided by the school management for the students of health school to be living and our students are living in this hostel. And the same management collected money from them, the same management still want to increase the school fees of the students.
"Look at the hotel that the students are living, look at where they are sleeping."
Meanwhile, the Kwara South Youth Congress has accused Fafoluyi Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media, of allegedly spreading false information about the state of facilities at the school.
In a statement, the group’s spokesperson, Adejare Bashir, expressed deep concern over what he described as the government's lack of accountability and sincerity in addressing the welfare of its citizens.
Bashir referenced a viral video released by the Kwara NANS chairman, which shows the deplorable living conditions of students at the college.
Bashir said that the situation reflects a troubling pattern of neglect by the government towards the people of Kwara South, adding that it is especially concerning in the context of the widespread insecurity affecting communities across the region.
He argued that a responsible government would have responded with urgency, sending the governor or relevant commissioners to assess the situation firsthand and engage in meaningful dialogue with affected students and school authorities.
Instead, Bashir lamented, the only official response was a controversial and allegedly misleading statement from Olayinka.
According to him, the media aide attempted to pass off a photo from a hospital project in Osun State as evidence of ongoing development at the Offa college, further fueling public outrage.
Bashir questioned the insincerity, asking, “What are they trying to achieve with such deception? Who are they attempting to impress—the vulnerable students whose wellbeing is at risk, or the affluent citizens of Offa?”
He further criticised the disturbing observation that a government responsible for protecting its citizens seems more focused on propaganda than meaningful action.
He warned that the approach erodes public trust and reflects a troubling departure from responsible leadership.
“When a government chooses to manipulate the truth rather than address pressing issues, it is an ungovernable act.
“It’s more worrisome when a government that is meant to protect the lives of its citizens now thrive in propaganda and insincerity using people lives to settle political inabilities, it’s not only an ungovernable act, it’s a step towards loss of trust in the government,” he added.
Highlighting their dedication to the truth, Bashir stated that members of the Kwara South Youth Congress had visited the college and interacted directly with students.
He urged the Governor’s Media Team to stop spreading misinformation and warned against exploiting the region for personal or political gain.
“If the government is unable or unwilling to provide necessary support, it should not obstruct potential benefactors,” he concluded by expressing disappointment, accusing the government of choosing deception over meaningful solutions.
