Donald Trump’s reversal on an immediate ceasefire after his Alaska meeting with Vladimir Putin has alarmed Ukraine and Europe. Instead of prioritizing a truce, Trump now insists on a full peace deal, echoing Russia’s stance that a ceasefire should come only as part of a comprehensive agreement.
Analysts say this move gives Putin time to consolidate gains. Kyiv sees it as a blow to weeks of Western diplomatic efforts.
Zelensky, who was excluded from the Alaska summit, held a tense call with Trump and European leaders and is preparing to travel to Washington. Meanwhile, reports suggest the U.S. discussed security guarantees for Ukraine “inspired by NATO,” though experts doubt Trump would commit U.S. forces to defend Ukraine.
With no sanctions escalation and Putin enjoying a high-profile diplomatic comeback, the Alaska talks are seen as a strategic win for Moscow.
