Drug Syndicates

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled at least six drug syndicates and arrested nine major kingpins through a series of intelligence-driven operations conducted nationwide.

In one of the major breakthroughs, operatives intercepted a consignment of illicit drugs concealed in pressure machine cylinders imported from South Africa.

A media statement released on Sunday by NDLEA's Director Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, said the shipment, which arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on November 13, was traced to a logistics company in Onitsha.

According to the statement, two suspects: 30-year-old electrical appliances dealer Ebulue Lotanwa Uzochukwu and 51-year-old South Africa returnee Christopher Michael Ndibuisi, were arrested.

The statement noted that the consignment contained 5.40kg of methamphetamine, 10.70kg of Loud, 16g of cocaine, and other banned substances.

The statement partly read, "In one of such operations, NDLEA officers on Tuesday 18th November 2025 arrested two members of a drug trafficking organization in Onitsha, Anambra state when they showed up to take delivery of 5.40 kilograms of methamphetamine; 10.70 kilograms of Loud, a strong strain of cannabis; 16grams of cocaine; 200grams of phenacetin; 200grams of methcathinone and 100grams of caffeine concealed in pressure machine cylinders imported from South Africa.

"The first to show up at a logistics company in Onitsha for the collection of the consignments was 30-year-old electrical appliances dealer Ebulue Lotanwa Uzochukwu who was promptly arrested while shortly after, another member of the syndicate 51-year-old South Africa returnee Christopher Michael Ndibuisi showed up and was equally arrested.”

"The consignments had arrived the import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Ikeja-Lagos with airway bill number 118-12882973 arriving from South Africa on a Tag-Angola flight on 13th November 2025 and was immediately seized based on credible intelligence. A follow up sting operation was thereafter organized in Onitsha, Anambra state where the recipients: Uzochukwu and Ndibuisi were arrested,"

At the Lagos airport, NDLEA officers also intercepted a brake servo used to conceal 2.3kg of cocaine bound for Gabon.

A freight agent, Ameh Solomon, and an auto-parts dealer, Nwafor Tochukwu Boniface, were arrested after a follow-up operation at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo.

In Kogi State, officers seized 4.7 tonnes of skunk from a trailer intercepted in Kabba. Three suspects were arrested, while a follow-up operation in Jos led to the arrest of the alleged kingpin, Marcus Danladi Dan Mangu, said to be the owner of the trailer and the drugs.

A husband and wife identified as Onun Okoi Okpotum, 55, and Itam Okoi Okpotum, 52, were also arrested at a warehouse in Ugep, Cross River State, where 362 jumbo bags of skunk weighing 4,706kg were recovered.

More arrests were made in Edo, Kebbi, Niger, Lagos, Enugu, and the FCT, including two young women who specialised in producing and selling drug-laced brownies online.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), praised the operatives for the series of successful raids, urging them to sustain the “balanced approach” to drug control ahead of the festive season. He warned that drug cartels often exploit the period to step up trafficking activities.
