A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees, Chief Ugochukwu Okeke (Enyioha), has hailed the PDP as the “beloved party of Nigerians,” following the party’s victory in the recently concluded Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Hon. Kasim Muhammad Ikwa of the PDP emerged victorious in the election held on Saturday, defeating candidates from other parties, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The result has been officially declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking a significant win for the PDP in the FCT.

Reacting to the outcome, Chief Okeke congratulated the winner, describing the victory as a clear indication of Nigerians’ enduring affection for the PDP despite it’s ongoing challenges and internal wranglings, which has factionalized the party. Yet at the grassroots PDP has continued to strive and resonate among the people.

“From what happened in Gwagwalada in the Saturday FCT Area Council election, we can see that Nigerians are very eager to return PDP to power,” Okeke stated. “PDP, despite any challenges, remains the beloved party of Nigerians; the party that made life easier for citizens.

He highlighted key achievements of PDP administrations from 1999 to 2015, including stable economic conditions that benefited ordinary Nigerians. During much of the PDP era, the official naira-to-dollar exchange rate hovered around ₦160 to $1, while petrol was sold at approximately ₦87 per litre in the final period before the 2015 transition.

Chief Ugochukwu Okeke further emphasized the PDP’s contributions to national development, such as providing improved electricity generation (which rose from about 4,000 MW in 1999 to higher levels by 2015 despite ongoing issues), safeguarding democracy and the rule of law, and fostering economic growth that positioned Nigeria as one of the fastest-growing economies globally at certain points.

“What happened in Gwagwalada is a bold message from Nigerians that PDP is still the party to beat,” he added. “I want to assure you that any challenges the party is facing will be overcome, and the PDP will bounce back to its full glory.”
