Breaking the Cycle: Why Awka North and South Must Return Prof. Orogbu for Lasting Progress

Awka North and South Federal Constituency stands at a critical moment. For years, its progress has been undermined by a damaging political tradition that restricts representatives to a single term in the National Assembly. This so-called "one‑term rule," widely regarded as a baseless construct promoted by opportunists, has denied the constituency the continuity and seniority required to thrive. The result is a constituency that remains politically disadvantaged, unable to secure influential committee positions, attract major federal projects, or build the legislative influence that comes with sustained presence in Abuja.

In Nigeria’s National Assembly, seniority is the true currency of power. Lawmakers who serve multiple terms gain access to leadership roles, strategic committees, and the networks necessary to channel resources home. This is why constituencies represented by figures such as Sen. Uche Ekwunife, Sen. Stella Oduah, Hon. Linda Ikpeazu, and Hon. Chris Azubogu have enjoyed greater development. Their longevity in office allowed them to occupy positions of influence and deliver tangible results. Awka North and South, by contrast, has been trapped in a cycle of short-term representation, missing out on the benefits of continuity and stability.

The consequences of this practice are profound. Without a ranking member, the constituency lacks a strong voice in national conversations, leaving it vulnerable to neglect and overshadowed by more established politicians. It has also stifled the growth of experienced leadership, weakened institutional memory, and fostered political apathy among residents who feel their interests are not adequately represented. A system that constantly resets its leadership cannot build the foundations needed for sustainable progress.

This is why returning Prof Oby Lilian Orogbu  (Ada Di Ebube) to the National Assembly is imperative. With her academic pedigree, legislative exposure, and proven capacity, she is well positioned to consolidate influence, attract projects, and ensure that Awka North and South begins to reap the benefits of seniority. Her re‑election would dismantle the harmful myth of one‑term representation and place the constituency on a path toward stronger political relevance and long‑term development. By retaining her, Awka North and South would secure continuity and establish a foundation for growth and stability.

As the old adage reminds us, a tree cannot grow tall if its roots are shallow. In the same way, Awka North and South cannot flourish if its political roots remain shallow due to traditions that hinder progress. The constituency must embrace continuity, nurture experienced leadership, and return Prof. Orogbu to the National Assembly to secure its rightful place in Nigeria’s legislative landscape.
