The Abia State Government has reacted to a viral claim about taxes allegedly imposed on akara sellers and petty traders.

The Abia State Government has dismissed claims that akara sellers and petty traders are being forced to pay N50,000 as tax, calling the report false.
Traders only pay daily tolls, not the alleged amount, and no new tax increases have been introduced by the current administration.
The government said the tax rates causing confusion were enacted in 2020 under the previous government.
The Board of Internal Revenue cannot raise tax rates without enabling laws, and none have been passed by the Abia government.
The state has also approved several historical and natural sites as State Monuments, including the National War Museum and Ojukwu Bunker in Umuahia, Government College Umuahia, Ibom Waterfall in Arochukwu, and Ulochukwu Cave in Bende.
These designations aim to preserve the state's cultural and natural heritage, promote tourism and attract UNESCO Heritage Site recognition.
Aba has been designated a Creative and Innovative City in recognition of its commercial, industrial and creative importance.
The retrofitting of the Ojukwu Bunker and National War Museum is about 80 per cent complete and should finish before the end of 2026.
On gratuity payments, the government has finished paying 2001 to 2010 retirees and is preparing the next batch covering 2011 to 2025.
Large payments are made in batches due to the huge financial commitment involved.
Reports suggesting payments end in 2031 are incorrect gratuities will continue as beneficiaries are verified and funds are available.
