You Cannot Negotiate Responsibility in Public Service- By Uzu Okagbue

Hi Dear, thanks for visiting! Like our FB Page or Follow Us Twitter for Regular News Updates!

What the Governor’s visit revealed is not an isolated lapse. It is a pattern: one that has been normalized over time by weak enforcement and a dangerous tolerance for mediocrity. A system where lateness is explained away, absenteeism is rationalized, and accountability is treated as optional will, inevitably, produce exactly what we saw.

Now, to those already reaching for the familiar refuge of “harshness” and “overreaction,” the question is simple: at what point did discipline become oppression? When did enforcing basic responsibility turn into an offense?

Because let us not pretend, no serious institution, public or private, survives on goodwill alone. It survives on standards. And standards mean nothing if they are neither monitored nor enforced.

The suspensions, therefore, are not excessive. They are corrective. A necessary signal that the era of casual public service must give way to one defined by responsibility and measurable commitment. You cannot demand the benefits of public office while negotiating its obligations.

There is also a deeper implication that must not be ignored. Institutions do not collapse overnight; they erode gradually, through tolerated indiscipline, excused inefficiency, and leadership that looks away. Reversing that erosion requires more than circulars and talks. It requires moments like this; clear, visible, and decisive.

This is where leadership earns its meaning. Not in speeches, but in the willingness to confront dysfunction at its root, even when it unsettles the comfortable.

At its core, this is not about lateness. It is about restoring a culture where duty is taken seriously, where time is respected, and where public office is understood for what it is; a trust, not an entitlement.

And if that standard feels too demanding, then perhaps the question is not about the Governor’s action, but about who truly belongs in public service at all.
