Burkina Faso should forget about Democracy – Ibrahim Traore

Burkina Faso’s junta leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, declared on Thursday that the population must “forget” about democracy, in an interview aired on national television.

Traore, who seized power in a September 2022 coup that ousted a previous military government, has since clamped down heavily on dissent. Last year, his administration dissolved the country’s electoral commission, and in February, the junta-led parliament disbanded all political parties, which had been inactive since 2022.

“We’re not even talking about elections, first of all,” Traore told state broadcaster RTB. “People need to forget about the issue of democracy. Democracy isn’t for us.”

Burkina Faso had originally planned a transition to democratic rule following the first coup in January 2022, with elections scheduled for July 2024. However, the junta extended the transition by five years, effectively allowing Traore to remain in power amid escalating jihadist violence that has claimed thousands of lives over the past decade.

The United Nations has called on Burkina Faso to reverse the ban on political parties and to halt the crackdown on civic freedoms.
