Gov. Seyi Makinde elevates 14 Oyo chiefs to Obas
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally elevated Oba Sarafadeen Alli as Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Oyekola Babalola as Ekarun Olubadan, and Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin as Ekerin Balogun, even though the trio were absent at the ceremony.
The installation took place at the historic Mapo Hall, drawing several dignitaries despite the absence of the newly crowned monarchs, who were neither present nor represented by family members or delegates.
Prior to their elevation, Oba Sarafadeen Alli—currently serving as a senator representing Oyo South in the National Assembly—alongside the others, held positions as High Chiefs within the Olubadan-in-Council.
Their new status follows their progression in the traditional line of succession, in line with the provisions of the Oyo State Chiefs’ Law.
The state government explained that the decision to confer beaded crowns on the three chiefs was guided by legal requirements and aimed at preserving the long-established hierarchical structure of Ibadanland’s traditional system.
Representing the governor at the event, the Deputy Governor described the occasion as a blend of history, governance, and cultural heritage, emphasizing that it was more than a routine ceremony.
He stated that the elevation reflects a firm commitment to sustaining a system that has long ensured stability and identity across generations, noting that the process strictly followed both legal frameworks and customary practices.
“This ceremony goes beyond formality. It represents a deliberate affirmation of our commitment to uphold the rule of law while preserving the dignity and relevance of our traditional institutions.”
He further referenced Section 20, Subsections (1) and (4) of the Chiefs’ Law, which grants the governor authority to approve such elevations, adding that the move helps prevent disruptions or gaps in the well-organized chieftaincy structure of Ibadanland.
According to him, the traditional institution continues to serve as a crucial foundation for peace, continuity, and cultural identity.
