Nigerian Youths Trained to Fight Fake News Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigerian officials are training young people to fight hate speech and false information as the country heads toward the 2027 elections.

A peace institute organised a two-day programme for more than eighty young Nigerians, including national service members and university interns, to teach them conflict management, leadership and fact-checking skills.

The director of the institute said young Nigerians need to move beyond just receiving help with peacebuilding and become active in preventing conflict themselves.

The training will show them how government policies connect to real life and help them have meaningful conversations with their peers about current issues.

Participants will learn to spot misinformation, false information and misleading information spreading especially on social media.

As elections approach, young people need to verify facts before sharing them and check sources carefully before acting.

They will also learn basic leadership and conflict management skills.

The institute found a gap between what students learn in school and what the government is actually doing.

Some students study international relations but do not know the government's foreign policy direction.

Some study economics but do not understand government priorities.

This disconnection is a problem that the training aims to fix.

Officials urged the young trainees to use their influence positively and help build bridges across ethnic, religious and political divides.

They warned that the election period could create tension and expose young people to manipulation.

As soon as they see signs of injustice, exclusion or hate speech, they should work to address it whether online or in their communities.

Peace workers also stressed that peacebuilding is a long-term commitment, not a way to make quick money.

Meaningful progress cannot happen without peace, and young Nigerians have a responsibility to understand what causes conflict and work toward solutions.
