Suspected Boko Haram members attacked the convoy of Mustapha Gubio, the ruling APC party's candidate for governor in Borno State, on Thursday afternoon.
The attack happened around 2:30pm along a highway in the northern part of the state as Gubio and his team travelled to thank party members who voted for him as their preferred candidate.
The convoy came under fire near the Kareto community.
According to a witness who was there, it was terrifying.
The terrorists fired rockets and bullets at their vehicles.
But security forces, soldiers, police, and other agencies working together fought back hard and chased the attackers away.
A police spokesperson confirmed the attack.
He said tactical officers exchanged gunfire with the suspected terrorists, forced them to run into the bush, and then swept the area to look for more explosives that might have been left behind.
While some police vehicles were damaged in the exchange, everyone in Gubio's convoy made it out safely.
No one was hurt.
The governor candidate and government officials were evacuated to a secure location after the incident.
