Ondo Lawyers Tell Police to Stop Harassing Them at Police Stations

Lawyers in Akure say some police officers have been treating them badly when they visit stations to help their clients.

The Akure branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Ondo State Police Command to stop the harassment and intimidation of lawyers visiting police stations to represent their clients.

During a visit to Commissioner of Police Felix Ohagwu, NBA Akure Chairman Oju Kekemeke emphasized that both lawyers and police officers must maintain mutual respect while carrying out their duties.

Kekemeke raised concerns over reports of lawyers being mistreated at stations and strongly criticized the command's policy requiring legal practitioners to surrender their mobile phones before entering, noting that the devices hold essential, confidential client information.

To resolve recurring conflicts, the NBA proposed regular joint coordination meetings, monthly inspections of detention facilities, and clear communication channels to handle disputes involving lawyers.

In response, Commissioner Ohagwu welcomed the initiative for stronger collaboration, assuring the association of the command's readiness to work together to protect human rights and uphold the rule of law.
