An American transparency activist and journalist, Aaron Greenspan, has shared updates about his effort to get old U.S. government files involving Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and businessman Abiodun Agbele.
Speaking in an interview with Laolu Akande of Empowered Newswire, Greenspan explained that his request for these records is part of a civil court case in the United States to make government files public, and he made it clear that this is not a criminal trial against President Tinubu.
Greenspan pointed out three main cases from the 1990s connected to an old drug investigation, which include a group of criminal charges from 1992, a separate case involving Agbele, and a 1993 court agreement where the U.S. government took about $460,000 from a bank account under Tinubu's name.
He also mentioned that there could theoretically be a fourth hidden case against Tinubu because the investigators had gathered a massive amount of personal and financial details at the time.
However, Greenspan directly admitted that he has no proof at all to show that any secret criminal charge against Tinubu actually exists.
While the old files state that Agbele was tied to a heroin ring and that Tinubu was investigated over money laundering concerns, the 1993 money seizure was settled out of court without any criminal conviction.
The Nigerian Presidency has also repeatedly explained this point, stressing that President Tinubu was never found guilty of any crime in the U.S. and that the current matter in Washington is purely about revealing public documents.
Finally, Greenspan mentioned that his website suffered major cyberattacks while he was fighting for these documents, but he openly agreed that there is no evidence connecting President Tinubu or the Nigerian government to those online attacks.
