The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Chima Ofoeke over the alleged murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area.

The arrest followed days of uncertainty after the victim’s mother reported her missing, raising concerns about her whereabouts.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, the mother reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Umuchu Division that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026, despite efforts to locate her.

Ikenga disclosed on Saturday that police operatives, acting on intelligence, arrested the suspect in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga.

The suspect was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.

Providing details of the incident, Ikenga said the suspect allegedly admitted to killing the young woman during preliminary interrogation, reportedly following the breakdown of their relationship.

“During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the victim following the breakdown of their relationship,” Ikenga stated.

He further disclosed that the suspect led detectives to the location where Mmesoma’s remains were discovered and recovered.

The discovery has prompted further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young woman’s death.

The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka.

According to Ikenga, the directive is intended to ensure a comprehensive and diligent investigation and establish the facts surrounding the alleged crime.

The police command said it would continue to investigate the case, adding that further information would be made public as developments emerge.

Police Call for Prompt Reporting of Missing Persons

The Anambra State Police Command has urged residents to report missing persons and suspicious activities to the relevant authorities without delay.

The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
