On Thursday, the United States House Subcommittee on Africa held a public hearing to examine President Donald Trump’s recent redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), a status that subjects the West African nation to increased scrutiny over alleged religious freedom violations.

Lawmakers convened at 5 pm to examine the implications of the designation, which, if upheld by the Senate, could pave the way for sanctions against Nigerian officials found to be involved in acts of religious persecution.

The CPC status may also restrict certain forms of US bilateral assistance to Nigeria.
