LAWMAKING AND THE DILEMMA OF REPRESENTATION IN ORUMBA NORTH: A SERIOUS CALL FOR EXAMINATION OF OUR POLITICAL CULTURE

LAWMAKING AND THE DILEMMA OF REPRESENTATION IN ORUMBA NORTH: A SERIOUS CALL FOR EXAMINATION OF OUR POLITICAL CULTURE

Hi Dear, thanks for visiting! Like our FB Page or Follow Us Twitter for Regular News Updates!
I am moved to discuss the above topic for the sake of minds that are perishing and contributing to the high rate of value decline in our society. A sane society is guided by good laws and order. Such a society is regarded as a civil society because it has laws that shape lives, control behaviour, and prevent people from crossing boundaries or infringing on other people’s rights.

Understanding the importance of lawmaking in every society is imperative, especially in Orumba North, where empowerment, infrastructure, and constituency projects have become the order of the day. These activities often overshadow the major duties of a lawmaker, such as sponsoring bills, moving motions, studying existing laws, and proposing amendments where necessary to ensure that the lives of the common people are protected through legislation.

The primary duty of government is to protect
the lives and property of its citizens. The three arms of government should do this using different instruments:
- The legislature should protect citizens’ lives and property through proper and suitable lawmaking.
- The executive should use its powers, such as the police, military, and other security agencies, to enforce the laws effectively and protect what the legislature has legislated.
- The judiciary should interpret the laws and punish offenders so that wrongful acts are not repeated.

However, it is pertinent to point out that the position of a lawmaker has been so undermined by our people that we overlook the major duties for which we are supposed to hold them accountable, and instead focus on financial and material benefits. Those benefits, without good laws to protect them, will suffer severe setbacks, and there is every possibility that the beneficiaries will go back to square one.

*Lawmaking*

Lawmaking is a serious business that requires someone who understands the meaning of law, why laws should be made, and how good laws can be developed. A person involved in lawmaking must have a conscience, believe in the rule of law, and be law-abiding. The position of lawmaker is not for criminals, hoodlums, hooligans, political opportunists, or those who only pay lip service. A lawmaker must be ready to research the effects of existing laws, consider how they can work better, and propose new laws to improve society. This implies that anyone seeking the office of lawmaker must be reasonable, guided by good conscience, and ready to work hard to meet the needs of the people he or she represents by making laws that protect their means of survival.

*Examining our political culture*

Orumba North Local Government constituency is blessed with wise, educated, and talented people with technical know-how who could change the face of the constituency if good laws were made. It is also worth noting that we have sent sharp minds to the state assembly who tried their best to serve the people in various ways. But one important point is this: we do not often access or interact with most of them, and we focus more on how much a candidate gives us than on how prepared they are for the office. If we can change our mindset, remove materialism, and replace it with reason and preparedness in choosing our lawmakers, the dreams of the common people in Orumba North can be achieved quickly.

Ndigbo si na ajughi aju were rie, na akpata ayaghi aya wee nwuo. We must cleanse our conscience and line of thought so that we reject unnecessary gifts from unprepared and lawless politicians who are only looking for opportunities to enrich themselves without rendering commensurate services to the people.

It is high time we examined our political culture and changed our political behaviour, because whatever behaviour a people adopt for a long time becomes their culture. In other words, “Aru gbaa afo, o buru omenani.” We must learn to call a spade a spade. Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach. Let us not sell our birthrights for a pot of porridge.

*Good News and a call for acceptance*

When issues arise in a polity, the reasonable thing to do is to find solution and the type of solution needed has to be considered too.
In our own case, what we need as solution is someone who knows the law, understands how it works, knows how to make laws and is willing to do that with good conscience and the consent of his people. And our brother and Ally, Chief Honourable Barrister Uchenna Daniel Obiora (Ikeoha Okwaeze) has offered himself to serve the people in all honesty and transparency, and the only thing we need to do is to encourage APGA stakeholders to adopt him as a consensus candidate because he is the best among all the candidates.
The stake holders of Orumba North can organise a debate among the aspirants to confirm this statement because I know whom I'm talking about.

Choosing Ikeoha Okwaeze as the APGA candidate for the house of Assembly is the best thing that can happen to Orumba North Local Government constituency, and loosing his kind of personality is going to be a big blow to the constituency.
