Crisis Rocks Nsugbe Community In Anambra Over Igweship Tussle

Tension has reportedly erupted in Nsugbe community, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, following moves to conduct an election for a new traditional ruler despite an alleged subsisting court order restraining the exercise.
According to Azubuike Obiekwe, Esq., an indigene of the community, the Anambra State High Court had on August 5, 2025, granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the selection or election of an Igwe of Nsugbe pending the determination of a substantive suit challenging the process.
The Igweship contest reportedly involves Mr. Nzesi Nweke, elder brother of the Anambra State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Tochukwu Nweke, SAN, and Obi Franklin Amechi Okeke (Odanike Nsugbe), a businessman and philanthropist.
At the heart of the dispute is the method for selecting the traditional ruler. Obiekwe said the Nsugbe Constitution provides for voting by adult members of Ivite Quarter, whose turn it is to produce the Igwe, while some interests allegedly favoured a delegate system. Aggrieved members of the community subsequently approached the court.
Obiekwe further alleged that on August 24, 2026, the Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy/Community Affairs, Vincent Ifeanyi Ezeaka, dissolved the elected Nsugbe Development Union executive and constituted a caretaker committee.
The caretaker committee reportedly announced on the night of Saturday, August 29, that an Igweship election would hold at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 30, a development that sparked protests and resistance from some members of the community.
Obiekwe described the planned exercise as a violation of the subsisting court order and called on Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to intervene urgently to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Videos reportedly recorded in Nsugbe on Sunday morning showed residents protesting the exercise, with prominent indigenes, including Senators Alphonsus Igbeke and Tony Nwoye, said to be among those opposing the process.
As of the time of this report, the Anambra State Government and other parties mentioned in the allegations had not publicly responded to the claims.
