Nigeria Customs says it has seized police uniforms, guns, ammunition and several other illegal goods during its recent operations.
Nigeria Customs Service seized police uniforms, weapons and ammunition during anti-smuggling operations in August 2026, raising security concerns.
The Oyo/Osun Area Command intercepted 573 police crests, 92 yards of police camouflage fabric, a pistol, six pistol magazines, a pump-action magazine and 60 detonating cords.
The Acting Customs Controller said the police materials could be misused for impersonation or to gain unauthorized access to restricted areas.
The seizure of weapons also alarmed authorities.
The command also intercepted mercury, which officials said poses serious risks if not handled properly.
Uncontrolled movement of mercury could cause fire, explosion, injury, property damage and in extreme cases, loss of lives.
Other items seized included 2,012 bags of foreign rice, 2,440 wraps of cannabis, 1,150 used tyres, 101 used compressors, 48 packs of 225mg tramadol, 105 bales of used clothing, 18 sacks of used shoes, 5,000 litres of fuel, 33 bottles of vegetable oil, 30 bags of foreign sugar, 17 used vehicles and 10 containers of mercury.
The total value of all seizures was 4.1 billion naira.
The Customs Service generated 65.6 billion naira in revenue between January and August 2026, a 13.88 percent increase over the same period in 2025.
