Iran can’t blackmail us – Trump after Strait of Hormuz closure
United States President Donald Trump has stated that Iran cannot blackmail the United States over its shifting position on the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Speaking at a White House event on Saturday, Trump reacted after reports that the strategic waterway was closed shortly after being declared open.
“We’re talking to them. They wanted to close up the strait again, you know, as they’ve been doing for years, and they can’t blackmail us,” he said.
Trump added that further information regarding Iran would be released later in the day.
The development follows reports that Iran’s military declared the Strait of Hormuz closed on Saturday, just a day after indicating it was open. The waterway is one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, with about one-fifth of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas passing through it.
Iran said the move was in response to what it described as a continued United States blockade of its ports.
