The Head of the Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council has dismissed concerns that technical problems affected the 2026 WASSCE results, insisting that the council's marking, processing and moderation procedures remain credible.

Dr Amos Dangut urged stakeholders with concerns to seek clarification directly from WAEC rather than relying on unverified claims circulating on social media.
Speaking during a virtual dialogue on Thursday, Dangut stressed that WAEC introduced major innovations into the examination process, including computer-based assessment and randomisation and serialisation of questions, to strengthen WASSCE integrity.
The transition to technology-driven assessment has contributed to a reduction in examination malpractice and improved examination credibility.
According to Dangut, examination malpractice dropped from 9.97 per cent in 2025 to 8.59 per cent in 2026, a positive outcome of WAEC's reforms.
The reduction in malpractice demonstrates that reforms have strengthened the examination process, reduced opportunities for cheating and enhanced the credibility, transparency and integrity of WASSCE results.
However, several schools, parents and education stakeholders have raised concerns over low grades recorded by 2026 candidates, particularly in English Language and Mathematics.
Many schools said the results did not match their students' academic records, mock examination performances and previous achievements.
Their concerns centred on alleged technical glitches and possible irregularities in result processing.
The Principal of Babcock School in Ogun State described the WASSCE results as the worst recorded by the school in thirty-one years of operation.
Of one hundred and ninety students who sat for the examination, only twenty-seven achieved satisfactory results. Several candidates failed subjects including Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Stakeholders called on WAEC to review the results, particularly for candidates whose performances were inconsistent with their previous academic records.
